As we finish out Q1 of 2007, the numbers are in, and a clear winner has emerged in the battle of the next-gen consoles. The Nintendo Wii is outselling the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 by a wide margin, and is only outpaced by the Nintendo DS. This means Nintendo has the two top selling game consoles on the planet. What's the secret behind Nintendo's success? According to President Satoru Iwata, it's making consoles that people can actually afford.
"Our research indicates that the average consumer has no money, so we priced the Wii at $250," said Mr. Iwata. "Honestly, did Sony really think people would pay $600 for a console? Maybe those freaks who wait in line at the launch, but to most people, $600 is rent money."
Sony CEO Howard Stringer defended his company's decision to sell the PS3 for an outrageous price.
"People should just get off their lazy butts and work a little harder for what is obviously the future of entertainment," he told us. "The real expense is going to be when you end up looking like a total loser because you don't have a Blu-Ray drive."
Stringer believes that consumers are basically mindless zombies, and will purchase the biggest and best system, regardless of the cost. (This strategy obviously worked for Betamax and 3DO.) He is sadly mistaken. Currently, sales of the PS3 lag far behind the other two systems because 95% of the population can't afford it. This spells certain doom for PS3 and its over-hyped Cell processor.
Where is the Xbox 360 in this mash-up? Microsoft holds a strong second place, and makes a profit on their consoles unlike Sony. Microsoft's J. Allard is optimistic about the future.
"In a year or so, Wii's graphics will be well outdated, and people will want to see some real hi-def," Allard said. "By then, we'll have Halo 3 and a price drop. Game over, Sony."
Sony received a sympathy card from former employees of Sega, the company that failed miserably with the Saturn and Dreamcast systems. The card was titled, "Welcome to the club." For now, the Wii continues to dominate, but it looks like Xbox 360 may be the next silent killer. Stay tuned for the next chapter in the battle of the next-gen consoles, and ultimately, for your wallet.
